Opposition Leader and Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Shafiqur Rahman has hoped that the new government led by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman will restore democracy, the rule of law, and ensure citizens’ voting rights in the country.
In a statement issued on Thursday marking International Mother Language Day and Martyrs’ Day, Shafiqur said the people of the country expect the newly formed government under Tarique’s leadership to uphold democracy, human rights, voting rights, and freedom of expression.
The statement was signed by Mujibul Alam, senior assistant secretary of the party’s central publicity department.
Highlighting the government’s key responsibilities, Shafiqur said it is the administration’s duty to ensure an environment where citizens can move freely while safeguarding their lives, property, and personal dignity.
The opposition leader also noted that the nation is set to observe Language Day at a time when a new government has been established under the leadership of the BNP.
However, he alleged that “associates of the fallen fascist regime” are still attempting to destabilise the country.
He called on the people to remain united in resisting any conspiracy or subversive activities.
Paying tribute to the language martyrs of 1952, Shafiqur said that students and youth of the country launched a historic movement against the then ruling authorities to establish Bangla as a state language.
He added that the nation would forever remember their sacrifice in securing the dignity of the Bangla language.
He urged all branches of Jamaat-e-Islami and the public to observe 21 February as International Mother Language Day and Martyrs’ Day, with due respect through discussions and prayer programmes.
