Fisheries and Livestock Minister Mohammad Amin Ur Rashid yesterday said agriculture, fisheries and livestock are the main pillars of the national economy; stressing that integrated planning and effective implementation in these sectors would make the country’s overall economy stronger and more resilient.
“If we can ensure integrated planning and effective implementation in these sectors, the country’s overall economy will become stronger and more resilient,” he said.
Amin Ur Rashid, also the agriculture minister, made the remarks while addressing a view-exchange meeting with officials at the conference room of the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock here this after-noon.
He said the Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is giving the highest priority to agricultural development, as he firmly believes that economic stability largely depends on progress in the agriculture sector.
Referring to Bangladesh’s favorable climatic conditions, the minister said many countries remain cov-ered with snow for six to eight months a year, yet they have attained developed status.
“In contrast, Bangladesh has the opportunity to produce crops throughout the year.
He urged all concerned to work together to transform Bangladesh into a prosperous and developed na-tion.
The minister underscored the need for coordinated initiatives by experienced officials and experts to po-sition Bangladesh prominently in global agricultural production.
He said the government is committed to public welfare and is working to meet people’s expectations.
Noting the vast potential for agricultural exports, he said the country’s climate and natural resources could be effectively utilized to boost overseas markets.
He stressed the need for ensuring a corruption-free and professional working environment, saying that collective dedication could usher in a new milestone in the sector.
Speaking at the meeting, State Minister for Fisheries and Livestock Sultan Salahuddin Tuku said a dem-ocratic government has been established through a credible election, raising public expectations signifi-cantly.
Learning from past administrative limitations, the present government is committed to carrying out its responsibilities with utmost honesty and dedication, he said.
He noted that canals, beels, rivers and other water bodies are the primary reservoirs of the country’s fish resources.
“However, many water bodies have been filled up or encroached upon for various reasons, which is deeply concerning. Effective measures must be taken to identify, recover and conserve these resources,” he added.
The state minister said the ministry would provide maximum support if officials and employees dis-charge their duties properly, adding that mutual understanding and collective efforts are essential for achieving the desired development goals.
Secretary to the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock Abu Tahir Muhammad Zaber and senior officials from different departments and agencies were present, among others.
