Shushashoner Jonno Nagorik (SHUJAN) has questioned the Election Commission’s (EC) decision to publish the election gazette late at night without conducting an investigation, despite allegations of vote rigging.
The issue was raised at a press conference held at the National Press Club in the capital on Thursday. At the event, titled “Information on Newly Elected MPs of the 13th Parliament”, SHUJAN Chief Executive Badiul Alam Majumdar presented the organisation’s findings.
Speaking at the briefing, Badiul said there had been allegations that unqualified candidates were allowed to contest the 13th national election.
“We requested the commission to investigate and resolve issues relating to disqualifications, including loan defaults and dual citizenship, before publishing the gazette,” he said. “We also urged the EC to certify within 48 hours of polling whether the election was conducted fairly. The Election Commission is an independent constitutional body mandated to ensure credible elections. At present, it is merely publishing results submitted by returning officers.”
He further criticised the commission’s role, alleging that it was failing to fulfil its institutional mandate. “Instead of exercising its constitutional authority, it acted like a post office — receiving results, stamping them, and forwarding them,” he added.
Badiul warned that the participation of unqualified individuals could distort election outcomes and undermine public confidence in the electoral process.
He said that in cases where questions arise regarding the validity of candidates or the integrity of the election, the commission has the authority to investigate, annul results, and, if necessary, call for fresh polls. “Such concerns have emerged in this election as well, yet the commission did not conduct any inquiry before hurriedly publishing the gazette late at night,” he alleged.
The SHUJAN secretary noted that there remains scope to address the complaints. “Under Section 91(F) of the Representation of the People Order (RPO), the Election Commission retains the power to investigate allegations concerning affidavits and make determinations even after the gazette has been published. It also has the authority to cancel the election if required,” he said.
