Cox’s Bazar: National Citizen Party (NCP) convener Nahid Islam has posed a note of warning saying no new godfather will be allowed to emerge in Bangladesh.
“During the previous government’s tenure, Cox’s Bazar had become a sanctuary of the terrorists and drug abuse. Just as Narayanganj had a godfather, Cox’s Bazar also had a godfather. Sheikh Hasina was a god-father and under her, there were small godfathers all over Bangladesh. We have put an end to that godfa-ther system. We will not allow a new godfather to emerge again,” he said.
Nahid was addressing a street rally at Shaheed Daulat Maidan on Public Library premises after the July March in the district town.
About July Charter, the NCP convener said they demanded that the government declare the July Charter by July.
“The tyrannical Awami League has looted and evicted Cox’s Bazar in the name of tourism. We want to develop an environmental friendly tourism industry where the rights and privileges of the people of must be ensured,” he said.
Stating that the Rohingya issue has been considered a problem in Bangladesh for long, he said, “We have sympathy for the Rohingya people. They have been left without rights and statelessness. But the solution is not that Bangladesh will take responsibility for them years after years,” he said.
“While taking responsibility for the Rohingya, we must also be aware that we are doing injustice to the people of Cox’s Bazar. We must take immediate measures to ensure that the security, law and order of the people of Cox’s Bazar are not disrupted,” he said.
Nahid urged the interim government and the world community to resolve the Rohingya issue quickly by making arrangements for safe and dignified return of Rohingyas to their homeland Myanmar.
NCP central leaders came to Cox’s Bazar on Saturday as part of the countrywide July March.
NCP leaders Akhtar Hossain, Hasnat Abdullah, Nasir Uddin Patwari, Dr. Tasnim Zara and SM Shuja Uddin spoke on the occasion, among others.
Earlier, the march started at 1 pm from the Cox’s Bazar Central Bus Terminal. At the beginning of the march, the workers made the terminal area buzz with slogans with posters, banners and placards.
The march, which started from there, paraded the important roads in the tourist town and ended in front of the municipality office.
Later, NCP leaders joined the rally at Shaheed Daulat Maidan located in the Public Library premises.
