The government believes that the Awami League’s letter to the United Nations, urging the global body to withdraw its support from Bangladesh’s upcoming election, will have no effect.
“Sending such a letter to the United Nations will not bring any result,” said Foreign Adviser Touhid Hossain while responding to journalists at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Thursday.
The ousted Awami League recently sent a letter to the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) representative in Dhaka, Stefan Liller, requesting the UN to refrain from providing assistance to what it described as a “non-inclusive and non-credible” election in Bangladesh.
The letter was signed by former education minister Mohibul Hassan Chowdhoury Nowfel on behalf of the party.
In the letter, Awami League urged the UN and UNDP to suspend electoral assistance until a “free, fair, and inclusive environment” is ensured. It also called for promoting national dialogue among all political stakeholders, upholding “human rights” and the “rule of law” as the foundation for any electoral engagement.
