British Parliamentarians praise Bangladesh over Rohingyas

Staff Reporter:

British parliamentarians debated, “Support for Rohingya Refugees in Bangladesh” on Tuesday. The debate was moved by Bedford MP, Mohammad Yasin, who had visited Bangladesh and Cox’s Bazar in January of this year.

Speaker after speaker from Labour, the Conservatives and the Scottish National Party praised the generosity of the Bangladesh Government, but noted that they could not be expected to meet this challenge alone.

Syed Mozammel Ali, Chair of the Bangladesh Study Circle, said, “We are grateful to Mohammad Yasin and the other MPs who spoke in this debate. The Rohingya are one of the most vulnerable refugee populations in the World, victims of the brutal Myanmar Junta. Bangladesh has been open-hearted in taking in the Rohingya, and it is right that British MPs have recognised this, and the need to support Bangladesh. It is also important to recognise that this situation is unsustainable and, as Mohammad Yasin said, the goal has to be to create conditions for the Rohingya to return home in “safety, dignity and security” as soon as possible”.
