EC assures Jamaat of executing court rule soon

Staff Reporter:

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Assistant Secretary General Hamidur Rahman Azad yesterday said the Elec-tion Commission (EC) has responded positively to their request for reinstating the party’s registration and electoral symbol, the Scale (Daripalla).
“The EC has assured us that it will take only the necessary time to complete the official procedure to implement the court’s verdict in this regard,” he said.
He was speaking to journalists after a Jamaat delegation led by him met Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) A M M Nasir Uddin and other commissioners at the EC headquarters in the capital’s Agargaon.
The Jamaat leader said, “We placed our statement to the EC and requested not to delay the procedures, as this issue is tied to the emotions of millions of people.”
“The court has returned our rights, and we want to keep our trust in the EC,” he added.
Replying to a query about the party’s symbol, he said, “The court has directed to take the registration issue back to its previous state. I contested the 2008 election with Jamaat’s symbol, Daripalla (Scale) and elected as a Member of Parliament (MP). The Appellate Division has repealed the unjust verdict. As it is a court order, there is no scope to deny it.”
The Jamaat delegation included Assistant Secretary General Ehsanul Mahbub Zubair; Media and Publici-ty Secretary Matiur Rahman Akand; Central Executive Committee member Mobarak Hossain; Central Working Committee member Jasim Uddin Sarker and senior lawyer Shishir Manir.
The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court on Sunday scrapped the High Court’s order that declared Jamaat’s registration illegal and asked the Election Commission to resolve the issue regarding the party’s electoral symbol.
