Staff Reporter:
A total of 707 cases — mostly on charges of murder and attempted murder — have been filed across 50 police stations in Dhaka in connection with the July Uprising.
The 5 August 2024 Mass Uprising led to the fall of the Awami League government, forcing prime minister Sheikh Hasina to resign and leave the country.
During the movement, numerous people were killed or injured in attacks and shootings carried out by law enforcement agencies, Awami League activists, and affiliated groups. A United Nations report documented 1,400 deaths and 23,000 injuries.
As of 5 August 2025, former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and thousands of top party leaders and activists have been named as accused in these cases, according to the Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s (DMP) prosecution division.
ADC (Administration) of the DMP Prosecution Division, Main Uddin Chowdhury, said that 5,079 people, including ministers, MPs, senior bureaucrats, and 23 police officers — among them two former inspectors general of police — have been arrested so far.
All cases are currently under investigation, police said.
