Awami League’s Noman Al Mahmud wins Chittagong-8 by-polls by massive margin

The Awami League’s pick for Chittagong-8, Noman Al Mahmud, has won the by-election to the constituency by a landslide, bagging 67,205 votes.

His nearest rival, the Bangladesh Islami Front’s Sehab Uddin, got 5,087 votes in Thursday’s election.

The results were announced at the Bangladesh Election Commission Centre by Chittagong Regional Election Officer and Returning Officer Mohammad Hasanuzzaman at around 8pm.

The by-polls was held in 190 centers from 8am to 4pm.

This seat had a total of 5,17,652 voters including 2,63,543 males and 2,54,109 females and.

In this regard, Returning Officer Mohammad Hasanuzzaman said: “A total of 75,305 votes were cast in the election. Which is about 14.55% of the total voters.

The election had four other candidates from other smaller political parties.

Among them, Syed Muhammad Farid Uddin of Bangladesh Islamic Front got 1,860 votes, Kamal Pasha of the National People’s Party (NPP) got 673 votes and independent candidate Ramzan Ali got 480 votes.

Chittagong-8 constituency includes the metropolis’s Chandgaon and Panchlaish police stations to the north of the Karnaphuli River and a portion of Boalkhali upazila to the south. This seat has a total of 5,17,652 voters including 2,63,543 males and 2,54,109 females.

The Chittagong-8 constituency had 190 voting stations, 76 of which were categorized as critical.

Each of those centres was supervised by 17 law enforcement officials.

Other remaining general centres had 16 law enforcement personnel deployed. Besides BGB, RAB, executive magistrate and judicial magistrate were also performing duties.

The seat to Chittagong-8 constituency fell vacant following the death of Awami League MP Moslem Uddin Ahmed on February 5. He was also elected in a by-election on January 13, 2020.

Moinuddin Khan Badal, the leader of the Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (Jasad), has been elected from this seat in three successive parliamentary elections since 2008. When he died on November 7, 2019, the seat became vacant during first period of the term.
