BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman has alleged that his party is being subjected to a media trial due to its strong prospect of winning the next general election.
“An ominous conspiracy is being hatched to ruin the country’s democracy and sovereignty and to recreate a situation similar to that of 1/11,” he said while addressing an iftar party held in Dhaka on Monday.
The situation took a worsening turn when the caretaker government backed by the army took over on 11 January 2007 and the event was later named 1/11. After the two constitutionally stipulated years, Awami League formed the government and the national election was held in 2008.
While virtually addressing the programme organised by Jatiyatabadi Online Activists Forum, he said there is no alternative but to form a government accountable to the people.
It will be impossible to do something better for the countrymen except for the presence of an elected government in the country, he said, adding that his party will reintroduce the caretaker government system if it is voted to power in the next general election.
BNP will come to power gaining victory in the next general election with people’s mandates if a transparent and neutral election is held, he said, adding his party is being faced with a media trial when the prospect is getting brighter.
“I noticed a few incidents in some newspapers this morning. Later, I phoned my party’s Dhaka headquarters and came to know that the incident happened one way, but the newspapers presented it differently,” he said.
A certain quarter is hatching a conspiracy against BNP, the nationalist forces and the country’s democracy and sovereignty, maintaining ties with their loyal media houses which they did during 1/11 in 2007, he alleged.
