The High Court has dismissed a case filed in 2011 against Nobel laureate Prof Muhammad Yunus, currently the chief adviser to the interim government, on charges of adulteration in Grameen Shakti Doi products.
The HC bench of Justice KM Hafizul Alam and Justice Md Atabullah delivered the order on Monday, said Deputy Attorney General Taherul Islam Touhid.
In 2010, Dhaka City Corporation authorities claimed that a 100-gram yoghurt of Grameen Shakti Doi, sold at a shop in Bangshal, was found to be adulterated, with the weight reported as 80 or 60 grams instead of 100.
Later on 10 January 2011, Health Inspector of Dhaka City Corporation Mohammad Kamrul Hasan filed a case against the shop owner Md Abul Quashem, vendor Md Tushar, and Prof Yunus, who was then the chairman of Grameen Danone Foods Limited.
Prof Yunus was granted bail by a trial court on 27 January 2011. He then appealed to the HC to have the case dismissed.
Prof Yunus’s lawyer Barrister Tanim Hossain Shawon said, “There were errors in the case. Moreover, Prof Yunus was the chairman of the organisation and did not have executive power. Yet, the case was filed to harass him.”
In 2011, the HC issued a rule to dismiss the case and ordered a stay. On Monday, after hearing the rule, the HC announced its verdict, declaring the rule appropriate and dismissing the case.
