Polls after necessary reforms imperative to overcome crisis: Fakhrul to UN chief

Staff Reporter:

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Saturday told visiting UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres that holding the 13th parliamentary election after implementing necessary reforms is crucial to overcoming the ongoing political crisis.

“We discussed key issues, including reforms, national consensus and the upcoming national election, emphasising the need to hold the next general election after necessary reforms to overcome the ongoing crisis during the meeting with the UN chief,” he said.

Earlier in the day, the UN Secretary-General joined a roundtable discussion on reform proposals participated by representatives of different political parties, the National Consensus Building Commission and other stakeholders at Hotel InterContinental.

Apart from Fakhrul, Prof Ali Riaz, Dr Iftekharuzzaman, Badiul Alam Majumdar and UN Resident Coordinator in Bangladesh Gwyn Lewis were, among others, present at the dialogue.

The representatives of different political parties and top brass within the government also discussed the issue of dignified repatriation of Rohingya refugees to their homeland in Myanmar.

After emerging from the meeting, Fakhrul said leaders of political parties who attended the discussion sought UN cooperation to ensure justice for the July-August genocide.
