July uprising to be declared as ‘July Revolution’ on Tuesday

The Anti-Discrimination Student Movement will formally declare the student-led uprising ofJuly-August 2024, which ousted the fascist Sheikh Hasina regime, as the “July Revolution” on 31 December at 3pm from the premises of the Central Shaheed Minar in Dhaka.

Confirming the news on Saturday night, the organisation’s spokesperson Umama Fatema said, “The declaration will highlight why the oppressive era of Sheikh Hasina gave rise to the July Revolution, how it unfolded, and why we transitioned from nine demands to a single demand. The event will also reflect the aspirations of students and the broader public.”

Discussions surrounding this announcement have gained momentum on Facebook since Saturday evening, with members and supporters of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement and the National Citizens’ Committee actively engaging.

A widely shared post titled “Comrades, 31 December! It’s now or never,” has created a significant buzz across social media platforms.

Several prominent figures associated with the movement have also shared similar posts.

Youth and Sports Advisor Asif Mahmud wrote, “Comrades, now or never,” while the movement’s Convenor Hasnat Abdullah urged, “Comrades, 31 December! Now or never.”

Chief Coordinator of the National Citizens’ Committee Sarjis Alam declared, “31 December! Shaheed Minar, 3pm. The time is now – for Bangladesh.”

Convenor Nasiruddin Patwary echoed the urgency in his post, “All eyes on Shaheed Minar, 31 December, 3pm.”

Coordinator Rifat Rashid rallied supporters, posting, “All eyes on 31 December 2024. Now or never.”

The official Facebook page of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement posed a bold question: “31 December 2024 – are the revolutionaries ready?”

Additionally, many coordinators who led the student movement in July and August 2024 have shared similar calls to action.
