177 Myanmar BGP to be sent back soon

Staff Reporter:

The 177 members of Myanmar’s Border Guard Police (BGP) who crossed the border into Bangladesh will be repatriated shortly.

Director General of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) Major General Mohammad Ashrafuzzaman Siddiqui confirmed the matter while talking to the reporters at the BGB Monument at Ramgarh in Khagrachhari on Friday afternoon.

He said, “Process is going on to send the BGP members back to their homeland. We are hopeful of repatriating them soon. They will be returned how others have been sent back.”

The 177 members of the Myanmar BGP fled to Bangladesh amid the armed clash between the country’s security forces and rebels.

The monument is a place where the Ramgarh Local Battalion was established in 1795, which was, with the passage of time, turned into BGB.

Before the visit to the monument, the BGB DG paid a visit to the BGB Ramgarh Integrated Check Post (ICP) at Ramgarh Land Port and Bangladesh-India

Friendship Bridge.

During the BGB ICP visit, Ashrafuzzaman Siddiqui said that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated it last year while the prime minister of India inaugurated another ICP in the Indian part.

When the ICPs start commissioning, the economy of Bangladesh and India will flourish. Many countries, including Japan, are investing in both ICP parts.

The DG added that special security will be arranged at the BGB ICP.

After briefing the reporters, the BGB head distributed food items–rice, sugar and lentil –among 250 destitute people at a nearby spot. He then moved Ramgarh Battalion (43 BGB) to visit.
