Re-investigation into BDR carnage soon

Home and Agriculture Affairs Advisor to the interim government Lieutenant General (rtd) M Jahangir Alam Chowdhury yesterday said the government will start re-investigation and fair trial into the BDR carnage soon as a mutiny in the then BDR left 74 people, including 57 army officers, murdered in the Pilkhana headquarters in February 2009.
“Proper re-investigation and fair trial process into the BDR carnage will start soon”, he told the Journal-ists after a meeting with Swedish Ambassador to Dhaka Mr. Reto Siegfried Renggli at his secretariat office here this morning.
The present government is farm to establish peoples right, good governance and justice, Chowdhury said, adding “not only as a home advisor, but also a citizen of Bangladesh and a retired member of the Bangladesh Army, I want fair trial of the BDR carnage”.
During the meeting, they also discussed on prevention of human trafficking, agriculture rehabilitation and insurance, reorganized and reformation of police forces, money laundering and checking of corrup-tion between the two countries.
Seeking Switzerland assistance in agriculture rehabilitation, Lt Gen M Jahangir Alam said post flood agriculture rehabilitation is now a topmost challenge and priority of the government.
Talking about government steps on checking corruption and money laundering, Jahangir Alam said the incumbent government is now in a strict position for checking money laundering and corruption.
“The Swiss government will help Bangladesh in checking money laundering and returning of smuggled money as per the international rules”, said the Swiss envoy while the advisor sought Swiss intervention in this regard.
The high officials of the Home Ministry including political, economy and cultural affairs counselor of the Swiss embassy Alberto Giovanetti, among others, attended the meeting.
