The Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) has decided to purchase abandoned polythene, tin shells, and various other items to curb the spread of Aedes mosquitoes.
This decision was taken at the 26th meeting of the corporation held at the Nagar Bhaban building in the capital on Thursday (4 April).
During the session, council members approved the pricing and collection methods for these abandoned items.
According to the decision, each discarded commode or basin will be acquired for Tk100. Additionally, packets of chips, ice-cream cups, disposable glasses, or cups will be procured for Tk1 each, while unused polythene will be bought for Tk50 per kilogram. Coconut shells will be priced at Tk2, and plastic, melamine, or ceramic ware at Tk3. Used tyres will also be purchased for Tk50 each.
Mayor Atiqul Islam announced that the project will be implemented through the councillor’s office after Eid-ul-Fitr.
He emphasised, “Discarded polythene, chip packets, ice cream cups, cans, tyres, commodes, and other items scattered throughout the city serve as breeding grounds for Aedes mosquitoes, posing a threat to the environment. I have initiated this effort to purchase these items at specified prices. Individuals can collect cash by submitting these items to their respective councillor’s office in each ward.”
Mayor Atiqul highlighted that waste products will be collected daily by cleaning staff and transported to the nearest Secondary Transfer Station (STS).
He expressed hope that this initiative would discourage people from discarding these items and encourage them to deposit the scattered waste products with the city corporation.
