Human chain demands probe into death of Notre Dame student Dhruba

Staff Reporter:

A human chain was formed in front of Notre Dame College in the capital on Thursday, demanding a proper investigation into the unnatural death of Dhrubabrata Das Dhruba, a student of the institution.

Classmates and family of Dhruba expressed their frustration at the event although ten days have passed since his death, the exact cause has still remained unknown.

They alleged that the college authorities have taken no effective action though the incident occurred on the campus.

Dhruba allegedly fell from the college building on 12 May afternoon. He was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

At the human chain, Dhruba’s father Banibrata Das said the authorities are not revealing how his son fell from the building and the reason behind it.

“The college authorities are not cooperating in providing CCTV footage that could help uncover the truth. Neither they are conducting any investigation nor explaining the reason behind their inaction,” he alleged.

Dhruba’s mother Tama Rani Singh said, “We met with the college authorities and asked them how he died, but they did not say anything. We wanted to see the CCTV footage, but they claimed that there was no CCTV camera installed in that building.

“There were CCTV cameras everywhere else, but the building my son went to did not have any CCTV cameras. What’s the reason for that?”

She said the college authorities must investigate whether it was a murder or an accident. “Because the incident took place inside the college and the authorities cannot escape responsibility for this.”

Classmates of Dhruba said Notre Dame College is one of the renowned educational institutions in the country, and despite such an unnatural death here, the role of the college authorities has been mysterious.

They called for everyone’s cooperation in conducting a proper investigation into the death.
