Momtaz placed on 6-day remand in two cases

Staff Reporter:

A Manikganj court on Thursday placed former MP and singer Momtaz Begum on a six-day remand in two separate cases — one filed over a murder in Singair and another for vandalism and assault in Harirampur upazila.

Meanwhile, as Mamtaz was being escorted into the prison van from the court, an agitated crowd hurled eggs at her.

Judge Mohammad Abdun Noor of Manikganj Chief Judicial Magistrate Court-1 granted a four-day remand for the former Manikganj-2 lawmaker in the Singair murder case around 10:30 am.

Later at 11:00 am, Judge Ivy Akter of Chief Judicial Magistrate Court-3 granted a two-day remand in the Harirampur vandalism and assault case, following a police plea for five days.

Earlier, Momtaz was brought to the court from Gazipur’s Kashimpur Central Jail under police escort around 8:30 for the hearing.

According to court police sources, the murder case relates to a deadly procession in support of a hartal in Gobindal, Singair upazila, back in 2013.

Four people were killed in the incident. Md Majnu Molla, a resident of Gobindal village, filed the case against her on October 25, 2024.

Besides, Delwar Hossain, Organising Secretary of the BNP’s Harirampur upazila unit, filed another case accusing Momtaz of involvement in attacks and vandalism at Harirampur Police Station on October 30 last year.
