After two days of cessation, locals in the adjacent areas to the border with Myanmar heard the sound of heavy gunfire again till early Friday amid the ongoing conflicts between Myanmar janta and Arakan Army along the Bangladesh-Myanmar border.
Locals said, though the situation was calm on Tuesday and Wednesday, the sound of gunfire was heard after 7pm on Thursday in the border areas of Lombabil, Unchiprang, Kanjor Para and Nayapara of Hoikang Union of Teknaf Upazila of Cox’s Bazar.
They said that the sound of firing was heard for the whole night. In this situation, the residents of this areas spent the night in panic. But the situation is seems quite normal in the morning.
They said the sound of gunshots was heard from Jeongkhali BGP in Myanmar’s Rakhine State. It is an area near the 16th Pillar on the Bangladesh border in Teknaf.
There are not many people living in this border area. Locals used to do some fish projects here. Myanmar border is not so far from this locality.
Taher Naeem, a resident of Unchiprang in Teknaf, told the Daily Sun, “I have been hearing the sound of firing since 7pm from the border of Myanmar. After a while, heavy noise is also heard.”
Mahfuzur Rahman, a resident of the same area, said, “We didn’t hear any sound of gunshots from Tuesday night to Thursday evening. It started again from Thursday night. Locals are not going to the fish project because of insecurity.”
However, the situation in the border areas of Bandarban and Palangkhali in Ukhia is calm at this moment. Ghumdhum Union Parishad member Anwarul Islam and Palongkhali Union Parishad Chairman M Gafur Uddin Chowdhury confirmed that the situation on their borders is calm now.
