BCL leader held for threatening a candidate

Narsingdi: A union-leave leader of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) was arrested for violating elec-toral code of conduct through issuing a threat to an independent candidate in Monohardi Upazila of Narsingdi district early Wednesday.
The arrestee is Nadim Mahmud, 28, convenor of Doulatpur union unit BCL in Monohardi upazila.
According to the district returning officer’s office Nadim threatened independent candidate Saiful Islam Veeru while addressing a rally of Awami League-nominated candidate and Industries Minister Advocate Nurul Majid Mahmud in the upazila on Monday night.
A video clip containing his threat to the supporters of Saiful Islam went viral on social media.
Later, Monohardi upazila election officer Md Jasidul Islam filed a case accusing the BCL leader on Tuesday night following the directives from the deputy commissioner.
Members of police Detective Branch arrested from his village home at Keraninagar of Doulatpur union early Wednesday.
Returning Officer Dr Badiul Alam said they want to arrange a free, fair, neutral and competitive election and legal action will be taken if anyone violates the electoral code of conduct.
