Court Correspondent:
The High Court on Sunday granted bail to former lawmaker Major (retd) Akhtaruzzaman in a case filed over allegedly obstructing government work and misbehaving with officials at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.
A High Court bench led by Justice KM Zahid Sarwar passed the order after hearing his bail petition.
Senior lawyer Mohammad Shishir Manir appeared for Akhtaruzzaman, who was expelled from BNP several times and joined Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami in December 2025, during the hearing.
Earlier, on October 26, the Dhaka Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court-5 rejected his bail petition.
The Detective Branch (DB) of police arrested Akhtaruzzaman from his residence in the Dhaka Cantonment area on October 2. The following day, a court placed him on a one-day remand for interrogation.
After the remand, he was produced before a court on October 4, which rejected his bail petition and sent him to jail.
The case was filed over an incident at the airport on October 1, when passengers arriving from Madinah on a Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight faced a shortage of luggage trolleys and delays in collecting their baggage.
According to the case statement, Akhtaruzzaman allegedly verbally abused and threatened Airport Executive Director Group Captain SM Ragib Samad and assaulted security supervisor Warrant Officer Mohammad Kamal Uddin.
He was also accused of throwing bottles of Zamzam water from passengers’ trolleys and behaving aggressively towards a Biman representative.
