The World Press Freedom Day will be observed today with the theme ‘Shaping a Future at Peace: Pro-moting Press Freedom for Human Rights, Development, and Security’.
Every year, May 3 is observed as the World Press Freedom Day to evaluate press freedom around the world to defend the media from attacks on their independence and to pay tribute to journalists who have lost their lives in the exercise of their profession, according to the website of UNESCO.
World Press Freedom Day was proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in 1993 following a Recom-mendation adopted at the twenty-sixth session of UNESCO’s General Conference in 1991, the website added.
Marking the ‘World Press Freedom Day 2026’, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting will organ-ize a rally and a discussion in the capital today aiming to highlight the role of media in ensuring trans-parency and accountability in the digital era.
The program will begin with a rally at 9:00 am, starting from the Officers’ Club premises and ending at the Tathya Bhaban complex in Dhaka, according to a media release issued by the Press Information De-partment (PID) yesterday.
Later, a discussion will be held at 9:30 am at the conference room of the Department of Films and Pub-lications in Tathya Bhaban complex on Circuit House Road here.
Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapon is expected to attend the program as the chief guest while State Minister for Information and Broadcasting Yasser Khan Choudhury will be pre-sent as special guest.
