Some parts of July Charter involved deception: Law minister

Staff Reporter:

Law Minister Md Asaduzzaman has said there are various questions surrounding the Human Rights Commission and the Commission on Enforced Disappearances, adding that some parts of the July Charter involved deception and would be corrected and implemented by the BNP in line with its commitments.

He made the remarks on Friday afternoon while addressing a views-exchange meeting with members of the Jashore District Bar Association, held on the occasion of the inauguration of the association’s new building.

The law minister said that although Bangladesh has an independent judiciary, the Supreme Court had failed to maintain its distinct character.

He alleged that during the previous government’s tenure, the courts were not free from political influence and, in many cases, acted like political activists.

He said the Separate Judicial Secretariat Act, Human Rights Commission Act, Commission on Enforced Disappearances Act, and the July Charter Act would be thoroughly reviewed before being placed in parliament.

According to the minister, such laws require careful scrutiny so that no room remains for future irregularities or controversy.

“The current government and the people expect a transparent and ethical justice system. We want to close the path of intellectual corruption,” he said.

Mentioning attempts to create political division in the country, the minister said no division should be created over the spirit of 1971 and 2024.

“Everyone must move away from divisive politics and believe in the Bangladeshi spirit,” he said.

He also claimed that incidents of crossfire killings, enforced disappearances, and false cases have fallen to zero, adding that the government continues to work for public welfare.

The law minister urged political leaders to present these achievements before the public.

He also promised to restore the historic legacy of the Jashore court and increase allocations for the judiciary.

In addition, he said steps would be taken through the Bar Council to increase posthumous financial assistance for lawyers.

The meeting was chaired by Jashore District Bar Association President and District BNP President Advocate Syed Saberul Haque Sabu.

Among those present as special guests were State Minister for Power and Energy Aninda Islam Amit, BNP Vice-Chairman Prof Nargis Begum, Jashore-5 MP Advocate Gazi Enamul Haque, District Judge Mahamuda Khanam, and District Council Administrator and District BNP General Secretary Delowar Hossain Khokon, among others.
