The Bangladesh Petrol Pump Owners Association has said there is no possibility of fuel stations being permanently shut down, stating that pumps remain open wherever fuel is available and only close temporarily when supplies run out.
Syed Sazzadul Karim Kabul, convener of the central committee of the Bangladesh Petroleum Dealers, Distributors, Agents and the Bangladesh Petrol Pump Owners Association, made the remarks on Monday.
He said that depots are currently supplying less than one-third of the required fuel demand.
“Where fuel is available, pumps are open. Where there is no fuel, they are closed. However, there is no scope for permanent closure of any pump,” he said.
Visits to several fuel stations in the capital showed long queues of vehicles waiting for fuel. At some stations, customers were seen waiting as supplies had temporarily run out, while at others fuel was being sold according to demand due to adequate supply.
Although the rationing system for the sale of petrol, octane and diesel across the country was withdrawn before Eid, complaints have emerged that fuel is still not available according to customer demand.
