Govt publishes notice against Hasina, 261 others in sedition case

Staff Reporter:

A public notice has been published in two national newspapers against former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and 261 other fugitives accused in the much-discussed sedition case related to the “Joy Bangla Brigade”.

According to a press release issued by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), the notices were published in The Daily Star and Amar Desh newspapers on Friday, following an order from the Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Court.

CID’s Special Superintendent of Police (Media), Jasim Uddin Khan, confirmed the matter in a statement.

The notice stated that under Section 196 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), the Ministry of Home Affairs authorised the CID to file the sedition case. Based on that authorisation, the CID lodged the case with the court.

Investigations revealed that the online platform “Joy Bangla Brigade” had been used by individuals both inside and outside Bangladesh to conduct conspiratorial activities aimed at overthrowing the legitimate government.

After a swift and professional investigation, the CID submitted a charge sheet against 286 individuals, including the deposed prime minister Sheikh Hasina. The investigation involved collecting and conducting forensic analysis of data from various digital platforms, servers, and social media networks.

On 30 October, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Court No- 17, presided over by Judge Ariful Islam, declared 261 accused fugitives, including the prime suspect, and ordered that a public notice be published in national newspapers.

Acting on the order, the CID published the notices in The Daily Star and Amar Desh.

According to the CID statement, the agency is playing a key role in upholding justice in the country and in implementing the judicial agenda of the interim government.

The case is now fully prepared for the next phase of court proceedings, the press release added.
