Body of missing journalist Bibhuranjan recovered from Meghna River

Staff Reporter:

A body that was recovered by police from the Meghna River in Munshiganj’s Gazaria upazila belongs to missing Journalist Bibhuranjan Sarkar, family of the deceased has confirmed.

Family members of Bibhuranjan rushed to the scene to identify the body, according to media reports.

Earlier, Chiranjan Sarkar, Bibhuranjan’s younger brother, said, “We’ve seen the photo police showed us — I’m certain it’s him. We’re going to the scene now to complete some formalities.”

Masud Alam, deputy commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Ramna Division, confirmed the recovery at 5:44pm on Friday.

“A body has been found in the Meghna River,” he said.

Ramna Police Station Officer-in-Charge Golam Faruk said in the evening that it has not been fully confirmed whether the recovered body belongs to Bibhuranjan, as it has undergone significant changes.

“We are awaiting confirmation from the family,” he said.

Bibhuranjan Sarkar went missing on Thursday morning after emailing an article to bdnews24.com, adding a footnote that read: ‘You may publish this as my last piece.’

He left home around 10am, saying he was headed to his office but never returned.

The family filed a general diary with police late Thursday night reporting his disappearance.
