EC wants equal media access for all candidates

Staff Reporter:

The Election Commission (EC) has taken move to ensure equal media access for all candidates in elec-tion campaigns on Bangladesh Television and private channels ahead of the 13th Jatiya Sangsad (parlia-ment) election and the referendum.
In this regard, the EC yesterday sent a letter, signed by Md. Ruhul Amin Mallik, Director (Public Rela-tions) and Information Officer of the EC Secretariat, addressed to the Secretary of the Ministry of In-formation and Broadcasting.
The letter emphasized that fostering a conducive electoral environment is essential to guarantee a free, fair and widely acceptable election.
It said that government and private television channels can play an important role in the electoral process by providing equal access to all candidates during information dissemination.
It also highlighted that during programs, interviews, talk shows or electoral dialogues related to the up-coming election and referendum, equal opportunity must be ensured for all political parties and candi-dates.
According to Rule 25 of the Code of Conduct for Political Parties and Candidates, 2025, candidates or party representatives participating in media electoral dialogues are prohibited from attacking any indi-vidual in their statements.
The EC letter requested government and private television channels, and other media, to ensure that all candidates receive equal opportunity during the broadcast of electoral dialogues or programs and that no party or candidate is demeaned, urging vigilance and necessary measures in this regard.
