The Detective Branch (DB) of Rangpur Metropolitan Police (RpMP) arrested three alleged criminals from the city last night for detaining, assaulting and robbing a student from Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur (BRUR).

Deputy Commissioner of Police Sanatan Chakraborty confirmed this information to local journalists at the office of the RpMP’s Detective Branch on the Central Road in the city on Thursday afternoon.

The arrestees are Murad Hasan Muhid, 25, son of Abdul Aziz and Ratan Mia, 28, son of Faruk Mia from the Khamar Mour area and Nur Jamal Islam, 27, son of Nur Mohammad alias Bangtu from the Dakshin Babukhan area of Rangpur metropolis.

“During initial interrogation, the arrested suspects have confessed to their involvement in the incident,” Sanatan Chakraborty said.

He stated that on Wednesday afternoon, miscreants intercepted Suman Haldar, a student from the 14th batch of the university’s Finance and Banking Department, in the Lalbagh area, located to the north of the university.

They held him captive for nearly two hours, during which time they assaulted and tortured him. They then forcibly took Taka 2,800 from him.

Treating the incident with high priority, a team from the RpMP’s Detective Branch launched an operation that same night and, with the aid of information technology, successfully apprehended the suspects.

The official further noted that the three arrested individuals have multiple prior cases and FIRs registered against them for various offenses, including theft, robbery, and drug abuse.

They are members of an organized criminal gang involved in theft, robbery, and drug-related activities.

The victim university student has filed a case at the RpMP’s Tajhat Police Station regarding the incident.
