Commerce reporter:
Transactions through Bangla QR have increased significantly, with the daily transaction volume rising fourfold from Taka 40 crore in June.
The information was revealed today at the launch of the new initiative across several retail networks in the capital’s Banani and Gulshan areas.
Bangladesh Bank (BB) Deputy Governor Dr Mohammad Habibur Rahman inaugurated the service.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, the deputy governor said Bangladesh Bank had taken the initiative to expand the service across retail networks nationwide to promote cashless transactions.
“Person-to-person (P2P) transaction facilities were introduced on November 1 to improve service quality,” he added.
Dr Habibur Rahman said the central bank had also undertaken an initiative to introduce Bangla QR services across different retail networks in the country to expand the coverage of cashless transactions.
Highlighting the challenges of extending the service to grassroots levels, he said limited access to mobile devices and network facilities remained a major obstacle.
The BB deputy governor stressed the need for coordinated efforts among banks, retail networks and mobile financial service (MFS) providers to overcome these challenges.
He also expressed optimism that Bangla QR would play an important role in promoting financial inclusion and building a cashless economy.
Mutual Trust Bank (MTB) Managing Director Syed Mahbubur Rahman, speaking at the event, said increased cashless transactions would reduce the cost of printing currency notes while enhancing transparency in financial transactions.
The expansion of Bangla QR services aims to reduce dependence on cash and make digital payment facilities more accessible to people across the country.
