A sedition case has been filed against 73 individuals, including ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina, on allegations of planning a civil war and conspiring to overthrow the current government by participating in a meeting of an online platform called the “Joy Bangla Brigade”.
The second accused in the case is Dr Rabbi Alam, vice-president of the US Awami League. Additionally, 503 other participants in the online meeting have also been charged.
The court took cognisance of the matter and directed the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to investigate the case.
CID Special Police Superintendent (Media) Jasim Uddin Khan disclosed this information in a press release.
Citing details from the case file, the release stated that intelligence sources had revealed that a group formed the “Joy Bangla Brigade” during an online meeting on 19 December last year. The participants allegedly vowed to fight to their last breath to restore Sheikh Hasina to power through a civil war.
A total of 577 individuals joined the Zoom meeting from various parts of the country and abroad, expressing their unwavering commitment to follow all instructions from Sheikh Hasina, the release added.
