Sylhet: Sylhet division has witnessed 36 deaths and 33 injuries in 33 road accidents, with the high-est 15 deaths from motorbike accidents, in January of the current year.
Sylhet Division Committee of Safe Roads Movement (Nischa) revealed the information on Tues-day in a media release.
The highest number of accidents occurred in Sylhet district, while the lowest occurred in Moulvibazar.
In Sylhet district, 17 accidents claimed the lives of 20 people and injured 33 others, 5 deaths and 1 injury in Sunamganj, 2 fatalities and 3 injuries in Moulvibazar, and 9 deaths and 31 injuries in Habiganj.
Zahirul Islam Mishu, secretary to Sylhet Division Committee of the Nischa, said in a media release that the report was prepared based on data from five local daily newspapers, online sources, two national dailies, unreported or under-reported incidents, and information from Nischa’s branch or-ganizations in Sylhet.
The fatalities included 15 motorcycle riders and passengers, 9 were CNG (auto-rickshaw) drivers and passengers, and 9 were pedestrians.
Moreover, 4 people died in 5 accidents where vehicles lost control, 10 people died in 8 head-on col-lisions, and 3 people were killed in 3 accidents involving electric poles or trees. During this period, 10 drivers also lost their lives.
Of the deceased, there were 24 men, eight women, and four children.
In December of the past year, the division counted 38 deaths and 77 injuries from 31 road acci-dents.
