Staff Reporter:
Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam has claimed that the interim government achieved a 90% success rate during its five months in power, saying the country’s overall situation has remained stable with a significant improvement in law and order.
“We’ve overcome a turbulent time. Now the country is stable and its law and order has improved while the wheels of the economy are set in motion. Stability is prevailing even in the bureaucracy except for some isolated incidents. I can say the interim government has achieved 90% marks out of total 100%,” he has said.
Shafiqul Alam came up with the claim during an interview with online news portal Banglanews24.com.
Referring to the country’s forex reserve, he said it is on a growing trend while the economy remains dynamic.
Exports increased by 7% in September while 21% in October and 16% in November, the press secretary said. “We expect a good growth in December too.”
Responding to a query about the next general election, he said the interim government is going ahead with two potential timelines.
“If only minimum reforms are carried out, the election could be held in December next. However, if more extensive reforms are desired, the timeline could be extended by an additional six months.”
Shafiqul Alam said the entire matter depends on the nature of the dialogue regarding reforms and the extent to which they want to implement them.
“Reforms are an ongoing process. It’s not as if all necessary reforms will be completed within one year and half years. When an elected government comes to power, they’ll take the initiative forward. Our prime object is to hold a free, fair and transparent election in the country,” he said.
There will be differences of opinion among political parties but the people will determine which opinions they choose, he said in response to another query.
Asked about the proclamation of the July uprising, the press secretary said the interim government wants such a proclamation that will be prepared based on the consensus of all political parties.
