JU students vandalise murals of Sheikh Mujib, Hasina

Staff Reporter:

A group of Jahangirnagar University (JU) students on Wednesday night vandalised the murals of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Sheikh Hasina and other members of the Sheikh family on the university campus.

The protesters assembled at around 11:30 pm at the Bot Tola area and marched toward the Institute of Comparative Literature.

Later, they vandalised a mural of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on the institute’s wall and removed a graffiti from the wall of Al Beruni Hall.

Following the vandalisation, the protesters went to Sheikh Hasina Hall, where they vandalised the mural of Sheikh Hasina and erased the graffiti of her family members.

Meanwhile, another group of protesters went to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Hall to remove the hall’s nameplate, but an altercation erupted with the residential students over whether to remove the nameplate.

However, the residential students finally removed the nameplate following a discussion.

Yahiya Zesun, a protesting student at the university, said, “despite the passing of six months since Sheikh Hasina fled the country, the Awami League is yet to be banned. We see the history of other countries, where fascist people and groups responsible for killing and abducting civilians are banned. But, in our country the fascist Awami League party is yet to be banned.”

“The collaborators of the ousted fascist regime nowadays play the role of miscreants. For this reason, Sheikh Hasina shows the courage to deliver a speech from India. We don’t want to see any fascism in the future,” he added.
