Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Shafiqur Rahman said on Thursday that his party does not believe in unlimited or unjust freedom that undermines others’ character.
“We want a country where everyone has fair freedom. We do not believe in unlimited, unfair freedom that tarnishes others’ reputations, spreads falsehoods, or rumours. We neither want to grant such rights nor tolerate such actions,” he said while addressing a workers’ meeting organised by the party’s Magura district unit at Nomani Ground in the town.
Jamaat district unit Ameer MB Baker chaired the event.
“We are committed to building a Bangladesh of equality, in line with the aspirations of the youth who participated in the July mass uprising. If we have to wait for this vision to materialise, we are prepared to do so. However, we will not abandon the fight. This struggle will continue for us, and this time, we will stand with the people in their fight,” he added.
Shafiqur Rahman emphasised that the fight to establish a Bangladesh based on equality is far from over.
“I promise the souls of the martyrs and the injured from the July Revolution that if we come to power, we will not engage in extortion, nor will we allow anyone else to do so. We will not resort to land grabbing and will not permit such practices. Together, we will build the Bangladesh we all dream of,” he said.
The Jamaat Ameer affirmed that people of all religions and opinions belong to the country. “Based on this principle, everyone’s rights will be ensured. We will build the country collectively, ensuring equal rights for all,” he said.
He accused the ousted fascist Awami League government of ruling the country through muscle power.
“They deprived people of the right to free speech. People were not even allowed to scream or cry.”
“There is no region in Bangladesh where the fascists did not commit killings. They continued their actions until the last day of their rule before fleeing. If the country truly belongs to you, if you (ousted autocrat Sheikh Hasina) truly love the nation and its soil, why did you flee?” he questioned.
