BIWTA imposes ban on small vessels in southern rivers

A Correspondent:

Bhola: Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) has imposed a seven-month ban on the operation of small boats across nearly 3,000 kilometers of river routes in southern Bangladesh, including the coastal districts of Bhola, Barishal, and Lakshmipur.
The ban, which began on March 15, coincided with the start of the region’s “Danger Zone” season, char-acterized by storms and natural disasters.
During this period, only authorized bay-crossing vessels, such as sea-trucks, will be allowed to operate on these waterways. This decision was made in response to the unpredictable and often violent weather conditions that can make the region’s rivers dangerous.
Rivers like Meghna, Tetulia, Ilisha, Kalabadr, and Betua, known for their rough waters, will see a com-plete ban on small boats, including MV-class launches. BIWTA officials have stressed that trawlers were also prohibited from operating in these rough waters.
Confirming the ban on trawler movements on the rivers, Assistant Director of BIWTA in Bhola Riyad Hossain told that the movement of small launches was halted from midnight on March 14 and trawlers were also banned from these rivers during the Danger Zone season.
Sheikh Mohammad Selim Reza, Deputy Director of BIWTA’s Maritime Safety and Traffic Management Division in Barishal, elaborated that the ban on MV-class launches will last for seven months. Only sea-trucks with valid bay-crossing certificates will be allowed to operate.
