Journalism riskiest profession now: Ex-DU VC

Staff Reporter:

Former vice-chancellor of Dhaka University (DU) AAMS Arefin Siddique on Saturday said journalism is the riskiest profession as it reveals the truth.

“Journalists face many challenges while carrying out professional duties. They face the biggest problem in unearthing the facts, fighting against the lies. As a result, it is the riskiest profession now,” he said.

The former VC was speaking at a programme for learners and degree seekers on journalism at the Press Institute Bangladesh (PIB) in the capital.

He said, “Communication skill of a journalist is a must to set up and maintain connection with sources. Reporters who have the best communication skills can be better journalists than others. They produce quality and acceptable reports for viewers, readers, and listeners.”

In his welcome speech, PIB Director General Zafar Wazed said, “If you have technical skills, pictures, news, and other things can reveal the truth very easily. Therefore, in view of current times, journalists should acquire knowledge of mobile journalism along with fact-checking to prevent rumours.”

Speaking on the occasion, Chairman of the PIB Board of Directors and Editor-in-Chief of the Daily Sun Enamul Hoque Chowdhury said, “Journalism is a great profession and one can establish himself/herself in the profession if he/she works hard.”
