DNCRP conducts drive against onion price hike

Staff Reporter:

The Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection (DNCRP) has conducted countrywide drives to keep the price of onion under control as well as to keep its supply chain intact following uptrend in price of such essential item after India imposed a ban on onion export.
Officials at the DNCRP said that four separate teams of the directorate have conducted drives in various parts of the Dhaka metropolitan.
Besides, different teams headed by divisional and district level officials of the DNCRP also conducted drives in the kitchen markets of 54 districts to keep the price of onion under control.
Such drives will continue until the price of onion in the kitchen market comes under control, said the officials.
Talking to BSS, Director General of DNCRP AHM Shafiquzzaman said, “We’ve started drives following price hike of onion. We’re also looking whether onion, which were brought earlier, are now being sold at higher prices. Stern action will be taken if there is any irregularity,” he added.
He informed that some 57 teams of DNCRP conducted drives yesterday in the countrywide kitchen mar-kets including in Dhaka, district and upazila level to keep the price of onion under control. “Such drives will continue until the price of onion comes to normalcy,” he added.
The neighbouring country India extended the ban on onion until March – three weeks before the current phase of restriction expired on December 31 – in order to increase the supply in the domestic market and control the price of the vegetable.
