Critically wounded Inquilab Mancha leader and MP candidate from Dhaka-8 seat Sharif Md Osman Hadi’s condition remained unchanged as he is under treatment at Dhaka’s Evercare Hospital.
“Osman Hadi’s condition remains unchanged, and if improvement occurs, he may be taken abroad for advanced treatment,” his medical board said in a statement yesterday.
But it added: “A repeat CT scan conducted in the morning showed that brain swelling has further in-creased compared to before, indicating a highly alarming clinical condition.”
The board, however, said if Hadi’s health condition improved, he might be flown abroad for advanced treatment”.
Hadi, a frontline leader of the last year’s July Uprising, was shot in the head from a close range on Fri-day as he on an election campaign at the capital’s Bijoynagar area a day after the Election Commission announced the schedule for the upcoming polls.
The statement said necessary surgical operation was successfully performed on him on Friday when he was shot and rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) ahead of his transfer to the Evercare Hospital for advanced post-operative treatment and intensive monitoring.
The statement said the CT scan conducted early yesterday revealed that Hadi’s cerebral edema swelled further indicating an “extremely worrying clinical situation”.
It, however, said the patient’s lung function and mechanical ventilator status were currently stable as the doctors found no significant improvement or deterioration.
The statement said Hadi’s chest drain tube remained functional while his kidney function was currently maintained though the creatinine level slightly decreased.
However, due to the brain injury, some hormonal imbalances have developed, affecting hourly urine output prompting doctors to closely monitor his acid-base balance, fluid status and electrolytes for re-quired treatment.
The imbalance related to blood clotting and bleeding is currently largely under control.
The statement said due to brain stem injury and pressure caused by excessive brain swelling, fluctuations in Hadi’s blood pressure was observed while his heart rate was found to be somewhat higher than nor-mal.
But doctors were providing him necessary medical support to maintain blood pressure and cardiac stabil-ity.
It said the patient’s blood sugar was being closely monitored as in such complex and critical physical conditions fluctuations of sugar level are a “known clinical challenge”.
“The patient’s overall condition remains extremely critical,” the statement said adding, however, that the medical board was working tirelessly with the highest professionalism, sincerity and coordination to en-sure Hadi’s best possible treatment.
It said if the Hadi’s family, or the government through the family, wanted his transfer abroad for ad-vanced treatment, the hospital authorities and the medical board would provide all-out cooperation.
According to the statement the patient’s family was informed in detail about his current physical condi-tion.
According to police on Friday afternoon, Hadi was travelling in a rickshaw with another person when motorbike riding armed assailants shot him in the Kalvert area of Bijoynagar and fled the scene.
