AL may share seats with allies after watching situation

Staff Reporter:

Awami League (AL) General Secretary Obaidul Quader yesterday said the ruling party will share seats with the members of the 14-party alliance after observing the country’s political situation.
“The AL will have candidates in all 300 seats. But if there is a consensus, some seats will be left for the alliance members,” he told journalists at the AL President’s Dhanmondi political office in the capital this afternoon.
Quader said the next December 17 is the last day to withdraw candidature and the AL will observe the situation till the date and will adjust seats.
“We will do whatever necessary. Everything will be finalised by December 17,” he added.
Responding to a question whether there will be any chaos if the AL leaders become independent candi-dates and fight the AL-nominated candidates in the polls, the AL general secretary said, “We are observ-ing who want to participate in the elections. We have a strategic decision. There is the time of changing candidates until December 17.”
“We can change and adjust it within the timeframe. We will have strategic reasons,” he said.
Reply to another query, Quader said the AL does not have any strategy to bring BNP to the elections but the party will welcome BNP if it joins the polls.
“Some BNP leaders may join the polls. Some are collecting nomination papers…everything will be okay,” he said.
About the fair and free elections, the AL general secretary said AL President Sheikh Hasina has already asked the party’s nominated candidates and leaders and workers to follow the electoral code of conduct.
“Our target is peaceful, free, fair and acceptable elections,” he said.
