Khulna: Workers blocked the Khulna-Jashore highway for two hours on Tuesday morning, protesting the arrest of president of a food warehouse workers’ union and two others over an alleged attempt to take two truckloads of wheat out of a silo without invoices.
The blockade began around 9:30am and ended at 11:30am following the intervention of Sheikh Imam Hossain, general secretary of the BNP’s Daulatpur thana unit.
Hundreds of vehicles were stranded on both sides of the highway.
The workers, however, threatened to resume the blockade if Maniktala Food Warehouse workers union president Md Arif Hossain, is not released.
Loading and unloading activities at the Maniktala Food Warehouse also remained suspended.
Police detained Arif, silo machine operator Mehedi Hasan and invoice preparer Mohammad Kamruzzaman on Monday night after silo authorities intercepted two truckloads of wheat allegedly being taken out without invoices.
Daulatpur Police Station OC Muradul Islam said the situation is now under control.
