A Dhaka court on Thursday ordered the seizure of 24 plots of land in Pabna and two cars owned by former lawmaker Golam Faruk Khandaker Prince in a corruption case.
The court also ordered the freezing of 14 bank accounts held in his name.
Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Shahjahan Kabir passed the order following a petition filed by Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Assistant Director Papon Kumar Saha.
According to the sources, the value of the land has been shown at over Tk2 crore, while the value of the cars was not mentioned in the petition.
Golam Faruk, while serving as a lawmaker and a public servant, abused his power and illegally acquired and possessed assets worth Tk9.91 crore beyond his known sources of income, read the petition.
It said he deposited Tk212.67 crore and withdrew Tk212.66 crore through 36 bank accounts in his name, involving a total of Tk425.34 crore in unusual and suspicious transactions.
The ACC alleged that through these transactions, Faruk committed offences related to money laundering by converting, transferring and handing over money or property to conceal or disguise its illegal source, allegedly involving proceeds of corruption and bribery.
The ACC sought the seizure and freezing orders, citing that the accused was attempting to transfer, relocate or dispose of the immovable and movable assets held in his name or linked to his interest.
It further said that if the properties were transferred or disposed of before the case was concluded, it could cause financial loss.
