Bir Uttam Khwaja Nizamuddin Bhuiyan was martyred in a confrontation with the Pakistani occupying forces at Kanaighat in Sylhet district on this day, Friday, fifty-five years ago. Today marks his 55th death anniversary.
He was called Captain Nizam by his fellow soldiers for his brave contribution on the battlefield. On 4 September 1971, freedom fighters, led by Khawaja Nizam Uddin Bhuiyan, destroyed a bridge very close to the market on the Atgram road in Kanaighat. Meanwhile, a group of occupying Pakistani forces was stationed nearby and in face-to-face combat, Pakistani forces suffered heavy losses. Khwaja Nizamuddin Bhuiyan, the brave son of a Bengali mother, was martyred fighting bravely.
Mokamtila in Sylhet has the burial place of the brave warrior and the entire area is named Nizamnagar in his memory. Khwaja Nizamuddin Bhuiyan was awarded the title “Bir Uttam” in 1973 and “Independence Award” in 2023 for his brave sacrifice in the war of independence. A memorial book, “Nishchit Sangramer Shapath” has been published about this great warrior. The memorial book, published in 2021, is an authentic document based on the life and memories of the Bir Uttam.
On the 55th death anniversary of Khwaja Nizamuddin, his brother and former principal of Milestone College, Lt Col Mustafa Kamaluddin Bhuiyan (retd), has sought prayers from everyone for his departed soul. According to Mustafa Kamaluddin, the family will commemorate the day together. In addition, the “Bir Uttam Shaheed Khwaja Nizamuddin Bhuiyan Smriti Raksha Committee” will organize a memorial service at Bir Uttam’s grave.
