The mystery surrounding the sudden disappearance of gold trader Pintu Das, his wife and their two children in Chandpur remains unresolved even after police traced and took the family into custody from Fatikchhari in Chattogram early Friday.
A team of Chandpur Sadar Model Police Station located the family at a house in Fatikchhari around 5:00am after conducting a two-day search operation, said Sub Inspector Gazi Kalam, who led the operation.
“After tracing their location, we took Pintu Das and his three family members into custody from a house in Fatikchhari. They are being brought to Chandpur,” the police officer said.
However, police have yet to establish why Pintu Das and his family suddenly went out of contact or whether their disappearance was linked to any financial or business dispute.
Pintu Das, his wife and their two children had reportedly become unreachable since 19 August.
His mobile phone and gold shop remained closed from that day, while relatives also failed to contact the family.
The sudden disappearance sparked widespread speculation in Chandpur, with the issue also gaining attention on social media and in local media reports.
Various claims and rumours about their whereabouts began circulating.
The situation became more complicated when several businessmen reportedly claimed that Pintu Das owed them money and gold. Against this backdrop, police began investigating the family’s whereabouts and eventually obtained information that they were in Chattogram.
Pintu Das is originally from Fatikchhari in Chattogram but had been living and doing business in Chandpur for several years.
He initially worked at a gold shop before opening his own outlet at Akhand Market in Chandpur town.
According to local traders, he opened the shop around five to six months ago.
Before that, he had operated a gold business in the Jorpukurpar area for five to six years and at New Market for around three years.
He also has relatives in Cumilla and Mudaffarganj.
Despite tracing the family, police have not disclosed any specific reason for their disappearance.
Asked whether financial transactions or a business dispute might have prompted the family to leave Chandpur, SI Gazi Kalam said they could not confirm anything at this stage.
“More information about what happened over the past few days may emerge after questioning them,” he said.
Police said the family was being brought back to Chandpur, where their statements would help clarify the circumstances surrounding their sudden disappearance.
