Bangabhaban ready for Mirza Fakhrul’s presidential swearing-in

The Darbar Hall at Bangabhaban is fully prepared for the swearing-in ceremony of newly elected President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, his Press Secretary Md Sarwar Alam said on Friday.

“All preparations for the honourable president’s swearing-in have been completed. Everything is ready. The Cabinet Division will conduct the ceremony,” he said.

Officials of the Cabinet Division said more than 1,200 guests had been invited to attend the ceremony.

Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir will take oath as the country’s 23rd president at 7:30pm on Friday (21 August) at the Darbar Hall of Bangabhaban.

Acting Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad Kayser Kamal will administer the oath to the newly elected president, while Cabinet Secretary Nasimul Gani will conduct the ceremony.

According to the invitation cards issued by the Cabinet Division, the president is scheduled to arrive at the Darbar Hall at 7:30pm.

The presidential election was held in a festive atmosphere in the chamber of the Jatiya Sangsad from 2:10pm to 5pm on Thursday. Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin announced the results after the votes were counted.

According to the declared results, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir secured 255 votes to become the country’s 23rd president. His only rival, Colonel (retd) Oli Ahmad, the candidate of the 11-party opposition alliance led by Jamaat-e-Islami, received 88 votes.

Election Commission sources said 343 of the 349 members of parliament entitled to vote exercised their franchise. The remaining six MPs abstained from voting.

The swearing-in of Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir will formally mark the beginning of his tenure as the country’s new president.
