Malaysian High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Mohd Shuhada Othman yesterday called on Health and Family Welfare Minister Sardar Md Sakhawat Hussain at his office at the Secretariat, with both sides stressing the need to enhance mutual cooperation in the health sector.
Praising the progress of Malaysia’s healthcare system, the health minister said Bangladesh has also made considerable progress in some areas.
He said arrangements could be made for Bangladeshi specialist doctors to receive training in Ma-laysia on kidney transplantation, liver transplantation, bone marrow transplantation and other specialised fields.
He also mentioned the possibility of undertaking joint initiatives in various medical fields and the need to sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) in this regard.
Mentioning Malaysia’s significant advancement in the medical sector, the Malaysian High Com-missioner said patients from Cambodia previously travelled to Thailand for treatment, but they are now going to Malaysia.
He said Malaysia could also be a good destination for Bangladeshi patients.
He said interested Bangladeshis can receive assistance for medical treatment through the Malaysia Healthcare Travel Council (MSTC).
The Malaysian envoy mentioned that some Malaysian students in Bangladesh are studying MBBS and MDS at Bangladesh Agricultural University.
The health minister assured the Malaysian students of all possible assistance when necessary.
He said that in Malaysia, various medical costs, medicine prices and other charges are displayed on boards, and the costs are also lower than in other countries.
Officials of the Malaysian High Commission in Dhaka, officials of the Malaysia Healthcare Travel Council (MSTC), their Bangladeshi partners and senior officials of the Ministry of Health were pre-sent at the meeting.
