A BNP leader and a female passer-by were injured after unidentified gunmen opened fire in the capital’s Mirpur-11 area on Friday afternoon.
The injured BNP leader, Alamgir Hossain, 45, was admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital with bullet wounds to his head and back. He is a member of Ward No. 23 BNP under the Lalbagh–Nawabganj Road area of Dhaka South City Corporation.
According to witnesses and police, Alamgir was sitting at a tea stall in Block B of Mirpur-11 with several others when assailants arrived in a private car and opened fire indiscriminately before fleeing the scene.
The other victim, Josna, 65, a resident of Block B in Mirpur-11, was struck by a bullet in the leg while passing through the area. She was admitted to a local hospital.
Speaking from his hospital bed, Alamgir claimed that four armed men got out of a private car, targeted him and fled in the same vehicle after the attack. He alleged that he recognised two of the attackers as Rubel and Bappi, whom he identified as activists of Jubo League. He said he did not know why they had attacked him.
Alamgir said he and his brother run a fish wholesale business at Sadarghat in Old Dhaka and that their family home is on Nawabganj Road. Although he is politically active in Ward No. 23 of Lalbagh–Nawabganj Road, he currently lives with his family in Mirpur-11.
Confirming the incident, Officer-in-Charge of Pallabi Police Station Hasan Bashir said an investigation is underway to determine the motive behind the shooting.
