Staff Reporter:
Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed on Thursday said the government was not aware of any decision by President Mohammed Shahabuddin to resign, dismissing reports of his possible resignation as “rumours”.
“Rumours are rumours. If it becomes an actual event, we will see,” the minister told journalists when asked about reports concerning the President’s possible resignation.
When reporters pointed out that the matter had been reported in the media and was not merely a rumour, Salahuddin said, “Then you can ask the President.”
Asked what the procedure would be if the President resigned, the Home Minister said the President could constitutionally resign if he wished.
“The President can resign constitutionally. There are options, whether for health reasons or any other reason,” he said.
However, Salahuddin said the government had no information about any such decision by the President.
