Sylhet: Two Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) leaders of its Shahjalal University of Science and Technol-ogy (SUST) units have been suspended for four semesters over the assault of a student who complained about the quality of food served at a university dormitory.
The decision was taken at an emergency syndicate meeting of SUST held online on Tuesday night, Syn-dicate member Prof Jahir Bin Alam said.
The suspended students are Hasibur Rahman, of Political Studies Department and communication secre-tary of the SUST unit of JCD and Tarek Rahman, of Statistics Department and assistant office secretary of the unit. Both are residential students of Shah Paran Hall.
The university administration also barred the two students from entering or staying on the campus for the next two years.
Earlier, on Sunday, JCD removed the two from their organizational posts on charges of violating party discipline.
Prof Jahir Bin Alam said the syndicate took the decision based on the recommendations of the universi-ty’s investigation and disciplinary committees.
On July 18 night, Khairul Khandakar, a 2023-24 session student of Sociology Department and a resi-dent of Shah Paran Hall, was assaulted in front of the university’s main gate after he raised concerns about the quality of food served at Shah Paran Hall through the hall’s WhatsApp group.
He was later admitted to a hospital in Sylhet city for treatment.
