Road Transport and Bridges Minister Shaikh Rabiul Alam yesterday reaffirmed that the government is committed to reduce deaths and injuries by 50 percent by 2030 in rampant road accidents across the country.
Speaking at the United Nations High-Level Meeting on Improving Global Road Safety on Monday, the minister underlined Bangladesh’s ongoing legal, policy and technological reforms to improve road safety in line with the Global Plan for the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021–2030, according to a mes-sage received here yesterday.
He also highlighted the government’s efforts to expand AI-enabled speed management, strengthen post-crash response systems and implement targeted highway safety interventions, particularly for pedestrians.
Rabiul reiterated the government’s commitment to finalsing, endorsing and enacting a comprehensive Road Safety Law by December 2027 in line with the safe system approach and international best practic-es.
Reaffirming road safety as a national political priority, he stressed that achieving the 2030 target would require strong political commitment, effective partnerships and shared responsibility.
He said Bangladesh remains committed to working with the international community to build safer, healthier and more equitable roads for all.
Shaikh Rabiul Alam is leading the Bangladesh delegation at the United Nations High-Level Meeting on Improving Global Road Safety being held at United Nations Headquarters in New York.
Other members of the delegation include Road Transport and Highways Division Secretary Dr Moham-med Ziaul Haque, Bangladesh Permanent Representative to the United Nations Ambassador Salahuddin Noman Chowdhury, and Project Director of the Bangladesh Road Safety Project Mohammad Shabbir Hasan Khan.
