The government has continued its response to the situation arising from natural disasters including flash floods, landslides and hill collapses in the southeastern and northeastern regions.
District and Upazila Information Offices under the Directorate of Mass Communication of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, along with the regional offices of the Department of Information, have also been campaigning to raise public awareness on natural disasters.
All 15 upazilas of Chattogram district, along with Chattogram metropolitan area, have been affected by flooding, according to a PID handout here yesterday.
The District Information Office has continued emergency public announcements on the postponement of the HSC examinations due to the flood situation, avoiding unsafe houses damaged by floods or heavy rainfall, maintaining health precautions, preventing snakebites, ensuring the safety of children, women, the elderly and persons with disabilities, refraining from making financial transactions while receiving relief, avoiding electric poles and live wires to prevent accidents, preventing dengue by not allowing water to stagnate and other public awareness campaigns through road publicity and loudspeaker an-nouncements.
The report said there is currently no rainfall in Khagrachari district and no new incidents of landslides or hill collapses have been reported. Floodwaters have receded from most areas, although normal condi-tions have not yet been restored. Since the onset of heavy rainfall, the Khagrachari District Information Office has been disseminating awareness messages on landslides, floods and post-flood measures.
According to the report, the number of affected unions and the Cox’s Bazar municipality stands at 74. The overall flood situation in the district has improved. The district recorded 78 millimetres of rainfall over the past 24 hours, and no new incidents of landslides or hill collapses have occurred.
Since the beginning of the heavy rainfall, the District Information Office has continued awareness cam-paigns and loudspeaker announcements on landslides, floods and post-flood preparedness.
The report said the situation in Rangamati is normal. Since the onset of heavy rainfall, the Rangamati District Information Office has continued road publicity campaigns to raise public awareness and en-courage people living in landslide-prone areas to move to safe shelters.
According to the latest information received, the disaster situation in Bandarban is currently normal. The district recorded 30 millimeters of rainfall during the past 24 hours. Water levels in the Sangu and Mat-amuhuri rivers are flowing below the danger level, while floodwaters have receded.
People are returning to their homes from shelters. Since the beginning of the heavy rainfall, the District Information Office has continued awareness campaigns and film screenings on landslides, floods and post-flood measures.
According to the latest reports from the Sylhet Regional Information Office and the District Information Offices of Sunamganj and Habiganj, Sylhet district received 33.4 millimeters of rainfall during the past 24 hours and 37 millimeters between 6am and 9am yesterday.
With increased rainfall, water levels in the Surma, Kushiyara, Sarigowain and Piyain rivers have started to rise. Although the Surma River is flowing below the danger level, the Kushiyara River is flowing above the danger level at the Fenchuganj point. There is no risk of newly inundated areas or major or prolonged flooding, although short-term flooding persists in some low-lying areas adjacent to the rivers.
The report said the overall flood situation in Sunamganj district remains stable. However, river water levels have started to rise due to increased rainfall. The Kushiyara River is flowing above the danger level at the Markuli point.
Habiganj Sadar, Bahubal and Baniachang upazilas were among the three upazilas inundated by flash floods caused by erosion of the Khowai River. With reduced rainfall, floodwaters have receded from the affected areas. The district recorded 4.50 millimetres of rainfall during the past 24 hours, and no land-slides have been reported. Public awareness activities by the District Information Office are continuing.
According to the report, the overall flood situation in Moulvibazar district remains stable. The Manu River is flowing below the danger level. Fifteen unions have been inundated. Among those, the flood situation in five unions of Sadar upazila is gradually improving.
In addition, breaches have appeared in the river protection embankment in Kamalganj upazila.
The District Information Office has continued public awareness activities during the flood period and in the post-flood phase.
